OUR PROJECTS

No two projects are the same

Our work reflects the range and complexity of the environments we support — from targeted human factors reviews to long-term integration across major projects and new operations.

Here are some recent examples.

ROLLING STOCK MODIFICATIONS

We led a HFI program to support the redesign of a third driver seat for a national above rail operator.

By combining in-cab assessment, stakeholder engagement and structured HF analysis, we identified key risks and usability issues early — enabling targeted design improvements prior to broader fleet implementation.

Our work supported a smoother rollout, with clear alignment to change management and compliance requirements.

REMOTE-CONTROLLED OPERATIONS

We led HFI to support a variation to accreditation for remote-controlled yard operations.

Through early-stage analysis, workshops and HF requirements development, we identified key risks across operability, system integration and safe working interfaces — including traffic management and separation of people, vehicles and plant.

Our recommendations supported safe implementation and regulatory alignment.

ERGONOMIC ASSESSMENT OF PORT OPERATIONS

We led a HF and ergonomics assessment across a coal export terminal, examining the physical and functional demands placed on the workforce across diverse operational environments.

The work spanned production, maintenance, technical and environmental roles, including key interfaces across rail–terminal and terminal–maritime operations. Through on-site observation, stakeholder engagement and structured task analysis, we identified HF and ergonomic risks related to task design, equipment interaction and work organisation.

Our findings provided a clear evidence base to inform inform improvements to role design, task execution, engineering controls and system interfaces — while also strengthening recruitment, role suitability and injury management processes.

LOADING OPERATIONS & BALLOON LOOP UPGRADES

We led a HFI program to support a notification of change to accreditation for loading operations and balloon loop upgrades on a regional rail network.

The work addressed new operational processes, including train stacking, and a novel signalling arrangement within mine loading operations. By analysing new processes and signalling interfaces, we identified key risks early and informed targeted improvements to design and safe working procedures — supporting a smooth path to implementation and approval.

DRIVER WORKLOAD & FATIGUE RISK MANAGEMENT

We completed a fatigue and workload study of train crew for an above rail operator to support the introduction of a new driver roster.

The work included in-cab fatigue and workload assessment, stakeholder engagement, fatigue and roster risk assessment and structured HF analysis to understand operational demands and fatigue risk exposure.

Our findings informed the implementation of targeted fatigue risk management and work scheduling controls — supporting safer, more sustainable rostering processes.

CONTROL CENTRE REVIEW & UPGRADE

We delivered a HF review of an existing Network Control Centre for a below rail operator, initially assessing the control room against relevant HF standards and guidelines.

This informed a broader HFI program, including development of a Human Factors Integration Plan (HFIP), assessment of controller workload and fatigue risk, alarm system review, and optimisation of workstations, VDU layouts and control room configuration. Communication workflows between supervisors and controllers were also assessed.

Working within the constraints of legacy systems, fixed signalling behaviours and limited physical space, we collaborated closely with controllers, management and engineers to identify practical, risk-based improvements — supporting usability, workload management and alarm effectiveness without impacting live operations.

No matter the project, our focus is consistent - improve performance, reduce risk and design out error where it matters most.
